The Prince William Board of County Supervisors would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Colin Powell, the former U.S. Army four-star general and former Secretary of State. Beyond his military and diplomatic success, Secretary Powell was respected on the nation's moral compass. Secretary Powell and his family resided in Prince William County during the 1960- and 1970-time frame. They lived in Darbydale near Dale City in the Neabsco District in Prince William County. His children attended Prince William County Public Schools and his wife participated in community activities. Secretary Powell passed away on October 18, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19. He was a pioneer and served as the country’s first black national security adviser, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and secretary of state. As he is laid to rest on November 5, 2021, in a private ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral, Board members wish to offer condolences, pay respect, and remember Secretary Powell who was a distinguished member of the Prince William County community.
