VA Election Results: Salim, Boysko, Marsden Win Senate Races

Democratic candidates won their elections for Senate Districts 35, 37 and 38, each of which represents a part of Fairfax County.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Democratic candidates won their elections for Senate Districts 35, 37 and 38 in Virginia, each of which represents a part of Fairfax County.

In the 35th Senate District, Sen. Dave Marsden (D) defeated Mark Vafiades (R), according to unofficial results. Marsden won 37,339 votes, or 67.06 percent of the total vote count, compared to 18,159 votes, or 32.61 percent of the votes, for Vafiades.

In the 37th District, Saddam Salim (D) claimed victory Tuesday night. Salim, a Bangladeshi-American, received 30,133 votes, or 67.66 percent of the vote count, compared to 14,262 votes, or 32.02 percent, for Kenneth D. "Ken" Reid (R).

"I set out 10 months ago to win this seat because I felt strongly that the people in this district deserved better — people deserved a strong Democratic voice on reproductive rights, gun violence prevention, affordable housing, healthcare, education and all the other issues we value," Salim said in a statement. "Thank you for believing in me, and I can't wait to get to work for the people down in Richmond."

In District 38, Jennifer Boysko (D) won re-election against Matthew J. "Matt" Lang (R). Boysko had 44,978 votes, or 67.92 percent of the vote count, compared to 21,059 votes, or 31.80 percent, for Lang.

The races were key for the Democrats' hopes of holding on to the party's majority in the state Senate.
