Spring fever is in full bloom. Many local schools are already on spring break. We’ve had our first 80-degree day and the pollen count is skyrocketing. Moms (and dads) are celebrating the end of snow boots and parkas and looking forward to big and small events around town.

My family and I love the cherry blossom season. In fact, this year we are actually planting a yoshino cherry tree in our front yard because we think they are so beautiful.

We enjoy attending Family Day for the Cherry Blossom Festival at the National Building Museum. My daughters have done everything there from making a traditional Japanese tea house to creating kiragami flowers.
This spring we are planting a vegetable garden. The girls and their Dad prepared the soil and marked the various rows of seeds with homemade signs. They planted beans, carrots, lettuce and watermelons. I can’t wait to see if we actually get some produce. Last spring we had a little strawberry plant that produced about one strawberry a week. It was very exciting!

Another terrific thing about spring---we don’t have to wear winter coats anymore. My daughters all wore short-sleeved shirts one afternoon last week when it was 70 degrees out, and they were really happy. There is nothing like the feeling of the warm sun on your skin. Plus, the ability to go to a park and run around, climb and be free of the cold is just such a wonderful thing.
