New Details In Overturned Car Accident

 Fairfax County police, at this point plan no charges against an 86-year-old McLean-area woman who was driving a 2011 Lexus RX350 that struck a tree and overturned Thursday afternoon on Old Dominion Drive.

Fairfax County police who not provide the names or any identifying information on victims in any incident, unless they are charged. The driver’s injuries were non life-threatening, police said.

Thursday Update: Old Dominion Drive is open for traffic.

Thursday original story:  An older woman was hurt when the new Lexus she was driving skidded across Old Dominion Drive this afternoon, hit a tree and overturned just north of McLean,  Fairfax police said.

She was talking when she was transported by ambulance to Fairfax Inova Hospital.

The driver of the Lexus, which was purchased 20 days ago was going southbound on Old Dominion Road approaching Balls Hills Road when the car suddenly crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, slammed into a tree and overturned, police said. No other cars were involved.

The side airbags opened probably saving her life, police said. The tree suffered a deep gash near its base.

"We've had several of these (crashes) in the last 10 years in both directions," said Bill Senich, who lives in a house at the crash site. "I think people just don't follow the curve in the road," he said.

"It might be a good idea to reduce the speed limit," he said. The speed limit is 40.

Police diverted traffic from Old Dominion in the early afternoon until the car can be removed. Old Dominion should be open for rushhour traffic.
