Students use coding skills to solve Engineering Design Challenge (nn.k12.va.us) — Newport News fifth graders from every elementary school just tackled a high-energy Engineering Design Challenge at Newsome Park Elementary, using coding and engineering skills in Navy-themed missions. Kiln Creek Elementary took first place, and more challenges are already scheduled for middle, high, and primary students later this school year, reinforcing the district’s strong push into STEM and computer science.
   

2. 3 Newport News smoke shops shut down for selling drugs (13newsnow.com) — Newport News police shut down three local vape and smoke shops after raids uncovered more than 62 pounds of marijuana and other illegal THC and psilocybin products. One man faces drug distribution and firearms charges, and Chief Steve Drew says investigations with federal partners will continue to target illegal drug sales in the city.

Newport News Police Chief weighs in on sharp increase in youth shooting victims (13newsnow.com) — Newport News police report that 14 children were shot in 2025, a sharp jump from just four the year before, though only one case was fatal. Police Chief Steve Drew and a local anti-violence advocate disagree on whether the rise is systemic, but both stress that community involvement and youth programs are key to preventing future shootings.
   

4. Newport News man gets 40 years for leading major Hampton Roads drug conspiracy (13newsnow.com) — A Newport News man has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for leading a large marijuana trafficking ring run out of a local auto business. Prosecutors say the operation moved huge quantities of drugs and cash through Hampton Roads and East Coast airports, involving dozens of people. Authorities seized nearly $400,000, about 1,000 pounds of marijuana, and multiple firearms.
