NNPS students share innovation at VSTE conference (nn.k12.va.us) — Newport News Public Schools students recently took center stage at a statewide education technology conference, showcasing their innovation and leadership with hands-on STEAM projects and Kid Talks. Local elementary and middle school students discussed topics like responsible tech use and AI, then demonstrated summer STEAM Camp activities alongside educators and vendors from across Virginia, highlighting Newport News’ strong focus on student-driven learning.
   

2. Allen Iverson Granted Approval From City Council For Affordable Housing Project In His Virginia Hometown (afrotech.com) — Newport News residents can expect a new 120-unit affordable apartment complex, Iverson Landing, after City Council approved a needed zoning change on Old Fort Eustis Boulevard. Backed by hometown NBA legend Allen Iverson and developer Alvin Keels Jr., the project targets working families and aligns with Mayor Phillip Jones’ long-term affordable housing goals. The partners say they aim to add real value for local families.
   

3. Police identify man killed in 4-vehicle crash on I-664 near Monitor-Merrimac (pilotonline.com) — Virginia State Police have identified 42-year-old Newport News resident Robert O. Evans as the driver killed in a four-vehicle crash Friday on I-664 northbound near Exit 3 in Newport News. Investigators say a truck failed to stop for traffic, triggering a chain reaction that left Evans dead at the scene and caused minor injuries to two other drivers.
   

4. Hospital volunteers sew comfort for children during holiday season (wtkr.com) — Volunteers at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News are spending their Tuesdays sewing stuffed animals and holiday stockings to comfort young patients and newborns. The longtime “sewing ladies,” including 84-year-old Mary Anne Fletcher, say the tradition brings joy to children, relief to parents, and a strong sense of community and spiritual connection among the volunteers themselves.
   

5. Free breakfast improves Virginia students' chronic absenteeism (wtvr.com) — Newport News schools are among Virginia divisions seeing strong participation in free school breakfast, a strategy tied to lower chronic absenteeism. A new analysis credits Gov. Youngkin’s ALL in VA plan and expanded no-cost breakfast programs with connecting nearly 400,000 students statewide to morning meals and improving attendance, especially in higher-poverty districts.
