📰 News we're reading

• Youth gun violence on the rise in Newport News (13newsnow.com) — Youth gun violence involving children has surged 250% in Newport News this year, even as overall violent crime and youth homicide numbers decline. Local advocates and the city are investing more than $1.3 million in 15 intervention programs, many focused on young people, while community leaders urge residents to stay engaged with at-risk youth for long-term change.

• Norfolk felon pleads guilty to multiple firearm charges (wavy.com) — A Norfolk man’s guilty plea to multiple gun charges includes a key Newport News connection: one of the stolen firearms was a Glock pistol reported missing from the city. Police say they recovered that gun, modified as a machine gun, along with another stolen weapon after tracking a vehicle tied to a shooting investigation.

• Report: Chronic absenteeism drops to 14.8% in Virginia (13newsnow.com) — Chronic absenteeism is dropping across Virginia, helped by more students eating school breakfast, and Newport News is among the top divisions for participation. A “breakfast after the bell” approach lets kids grab food later in the morning, which advocates say makes it easier for families to still send children to school even if they’re running late.
