Winter storms cause flight delays and cancellations at Norfolk International Airport (wtkr.com) — Holiday travelers flying through Norfolk International Airport today are facing dozens of delays and cancellations as winter storms up north ripple down the airline network. More than 30 delays and 14 cancellations have already hit the airport, stranding passengers overnight and forcing many to rework their plans during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
   

2. ECHL strike freezes Norfolk Admirals season; home games threatened, could negatively impact nearby businesses (13newsnow.com) — Norfolk Admirals hockey games are on hold after an ECHL players’ strike, threatening upcoming matchups and the steady crowds they bring to downtown businesses near Scope Arena. Local bar staff say they heavily rely on game-day traffic, especially during a slow holiday season, and worry a prolonged stoppage could significantly cut into revenue as the January 2 home game hangs in limbo.
   

3. Old Dominion is working with the Navy to help sailors and their families struggling with mental health issues (whro.org) — Old Dominion University is embedding counseling graduate students with Fleet and Family Support Services in Norfolk to boost mental health care for sailors and their families. The interns, many with military backgrounds, provide crisis counseling and group therapy while gaining specialized training in military-related stress, trauma, and family separation. ODU now hopes to expand the program to additional regional Navy centers.

Tulare-native flourishes in the Navy (thesungazette.com) — A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier based out of Norfolk serves as the seagoing workplace for Petty Officer 3rd Class Marissa Rodriguez, a Tulare, California native building her career as a personnel specialist. Her story highlights the scale and mission of the Norfolk‑operated USS George H.W. Bush and how sailors stationed here support global operations while pursuing personal goals and education.
   

5. Virginia State Police study shows hate crimes on the rise in the Commonwealth (13newsnow.com) — Norfolk police are investigating vandalism at a local mosque as Virginia sees a sharp, two-year rise in reported hate crimes, especially those targeting race, ethnicity and religion. A state police report and a local political analyst warn that growing bias incidents, including recent vandalism in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, signal troubling trends and a need for stronger protections for marginalized residents.
