12 Virginia Hospitals Among Best In The U.S., New Ranking Says

Along with a ranking of the world's best hospitals, Newsweek included Virginia hospitals in the ranking of U.S. hospitals.

VIRGINIA — Twelve in Virginia are among the best in the country, according to a new analysis that ranks the top hospitals in 30 countries.

The 2025 World’s Best Hospitals ranking from Newsweek and its data partner Statista narrows down hundreds of thousands of hospitals worldwide to the 250 best.

No Virginia hospitals made the world's 250 best ranking. However, 12 were on the ranking of the 412 best hospitals in the U.S.

Virginia hospitals in the 2025 U.S. ranking are:

  • 49. UVA University Hospital, Charlottesville
  • 61. Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church
  • 72. VCU Medical Center, Richmond
  • 108. Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria
  • 123. VHC Health - Main Hospital, Arlington
  • 179. Inova Loudoun Hospital, Leesburg
  • 182. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax
  • 209. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville
  • 213. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, Williamsburg
  • 320. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk
  • 321. Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk
  • 325. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Alexandria

Hospitals were scored based on an online survey of about 85,000 medical experts and publicly available data from post-hospitalization patient surveys on their general satisfaction, Newsweek said.

Hygiene and patient/doctor ratios were also considered, along with a Statista survey on whether hospitals use “Patient Reported Outcome Measures,” which are surveys filled out by patients about their experience.

The top 10 hospitals in the world included four U.S. hospitals:

  • No. 1: Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  • No. 2: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
  • No. 3: Toronto General - University Health Network, Toronto, Canada
  • No. 4: The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland
  • No. 5: Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset, Stockholm, Sweden
  • No. 6: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
  • No. 7: Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Berlin, Germany
  • No. 8: Sheba Medical Center, Ramat Gan, Israel
  • No. 9: Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Singapore
  • No. 10: Universitätsspital Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland

U.S. hospitals in the top 25 worldwide included:

  • No. 13: Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles
  • No. 17: Stanford Health Care - Stanford Hospital, Stanford, Connecticut
  • No. 19: The Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City
  • No. 21: Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston

Along with U.S. hospitals, the ranking includes hospitals from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.
