At least 2,973 people lost their lives in the attacks, between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia and the hijacked plane that crashed in a Pennsylvania field. Alexandria's own first responders were part of the regional response to the attack on the Pentagon. The somber anniversary is marked across the country with memorial services, moments of silence and community events.
