ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria is starting the design process to renovate City Hall and Market Square.

The current City Hall dates back to 1871 and is in need of major updates, according to city government. The renovation project will repair aging building components, improve operating systems, optimize space utilization, improve building circulation and wayfinding, boost security, and provide space for community engagement.

Market Square, which has a history dating back to the city's founding in 1749, needs significant structural repairs along with the parking garage beneath. The design and function of the plaza and garage will be evaluated during the design process.

"This is an exciting first step in a long-awaited process," said City Manager James Parajon in a statement. "City Hall and Market Square should reflect this great city, our history, and the commitment to equitable services that our community expects. We look forward to reimagining how to ensure 301 King Street is a source of pride for our employees and residents."

Design is expected to continue through early 2026, followed by construction from 2026 to 2028. International design firm Leo A Daly will lead the design team with assistance from Alexandria firms Rust Orling Architecture and LandDesign.
