Power Outages Caused by Equipment Failure, Accident

Equipment failure and a separate vehicle accident leave nearly 3,000 locations without power.

The City of Alexandria and Dominion Power got hit with a double whammy Wednesday that left nearly 3,000 locations without power in two separate incidents.

In south Old Town about 137 locations still are without power. Dominion Power estimates that power will be restored at those locations by 4 p.m. A piece of switch equipment that redirects electricity failed Wednesday morning leaving 2,200 with no electricity.

Most of those customers were south of the heart of Old Town, down Richmond Highway toward 495, according to Dominion Power spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson.

It is not clear at this time why the equipment failed. "It could  happen for many different reasons," Anderson said.

Separately Wednesday, a vehicle accident on Duke and Jordan streets caused 600 people to lose power at 9:24 a.m.  Their power has since been restored.
