Gaskins Unopposed In Mayoral Race, 9 Candidates Run For Alexandria City Council
The six-member Alexandria City Council is on the ballot in November, and there are nine candidates running. Here's what to know.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria mayoral election appears uncontested, while nine candidates are vying for six city council seats in the Nov. 5, 2024, general election.
Alexandria City Council seats are elected at large, so voters can cast a ballot for up to six candidates. Candidates who won the Democratic primary are incumbents John Taylor Chapman, Sarah Bagley, Kirk McPike and Canek Aguirre and Alexandria School Board members Abdel Elnoubi and Jacinta Greene. Mason Butler and Roy Byrd are running as independents, and Celianna Gunderson is running as a Republican.
In the mayoral race, Councilmember Alyia Gaskins is unopposed after defeating Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and businessman Steven Peterson in the Democratic primary. Current Mayor Justin Wilson is not seeking re-election.

The mayor and City Council members are elected every three years. The City Council member that receives the most votes in the general election is typically chosen by colleagues to serve as vice mayor. The longest serving City Council member up for re-election is Chapman, who was first elected in 2012. Aguirre was first elected in 2018, while Bagley, McPike and Gaskins were first elected to the council in 2021.

Along with mayor and Alexandria City Council, Alexandria residents will have Alexandria School Board, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, president and a Virginia constitutional amendment on the general election ballot.
Early voting began on Sept. 20 and will continue until Nov. 2. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot will be 5 p.m. on Oct. 25.
Completed ballots must be returned to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on Nov. 5 or postmarked by Nov. 5 and received in the office by noon on Nov. 8.
The deadline for voter registration or updating your address is Oct. 15, but same-day registrations with a provisional ballot will be accepted through Election Day. For Election Day voting, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5. An acceptable form of ID is required to vote in person.
