Alexandria Named A Top Place To Travel By Travel + Leisure

Alexandria is named a top destination for cultural riches among international location on Travel + Leisure's list.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria is among international destinations on Travel + Leisure's 2023 list of top places to travel.

The city made the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2023 list, appearing first in the best places for cultural riches category. Associate editor Liz Cantrell made Alexandria her pick for travelers, noting how the city has come to terms with its history involving enslaved people. Freedom House Museum, a museum on what was once one of the country's largest slave trading companies.

Other sites mentioned in the Travel + Leisure ranking were the African American Heritage Trail, Torpedo Factory Art Center, Jones Point Park and Councilmember John Taylor Chapman's Manumission Tour Company. Alexandria's hotels are also highlighted, including Old Town North's Hotel AKA opening in early 2023.

Aside from Alexandria, destinations in the cultural riches category were Cairo and the Nile; "City" in Nevada; Havana, Cuba; Tangier, Morocco; Lakes Region, Turkey; the United Kingdom; and Venice, Italy.

Earlier this year, Alexandria was named eighth on Travel + Leisure's 15 Best Cities in the United States list. The list was part of the magazine's annual World's Best Awards, where readers would rate their travel experiences.

Visit Alexandria, the tourism organization for Alexandria, uses rankings to help the city grow tax revenues associated with visitors. Revenues have been recovering since the COVID-19 pandemic, although lodging tax revenue hasn't done as well as sales and restaurant tax revenue.
