Alexandria at Work: $4.9B in Employee Payroll, Plus More New Data on Employers in the City
New U.S. Census numbers focuses on non-government employers doing business in the City of Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Employers in Alexandria pay out $4.9 billion in annual payroll in the city. Released last week, the new numbers are included in the 2014 Statistics of U.S. Businesses from the U.S. Census.
There were 4,157 employers in the city — the majority of those being small businesses with less than 20 employees.
In total, there were 83,447 employees in the city. Businesses employing more than 500 total staff had the largest number of employees.

The data includes most employers in the city. It excludes businesses without employees, those working out of private households or government entities.
