UPDATE: Woodrow Wilson Bridge Lanes Reopen: No Threat, Police Say

Public safety agencies were checking out a suspicious package Sunday afternoon on or near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, police said.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (UPDATE 3:45 p.m.) All lanes of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge have reopened Sunday afternoon, after a car and possible package left behind after a person jumped into the water were "deemed not a threat," according to a Maryland State Police spokesman.

Public safety agencies had shut down all lanes Sunday afternoon on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge for a suspicious package investigation, according to Alexandria Police. Police asked that drivers avoid the area and to expect delays.‬

A spokesman for the Alexandria Fire Department said that the lanes were shut down after someone jumped from the Woodrow Wilson Bridge into the Potomac River. The fire department's boat rescued the person who jumped in the water. That person has been taken to a local hospital, the spokesman said.
