New Restaurant Opening In Long-Vacant Alexandria Space

The former Generous George's space is getting new life with a restaurant opening Friday in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The space that was once Generous George’s Positive Pizza & Pasta Place has been vacant for more than a decade. Now it is getting new life with a restaurant opening Friday.

Umiya Sushi, a Japanese restaurant with all-you-can-eat and à la carte offerings, announced on its Instagram that it opens on Friday at 3000 Duke Street in Alexandria. According to Umiya Sushi's website, the restaurant specializes in Japanese cuisine, including nigiri, sashimi platters, traditional rolls and non-sushi Japanese options. All-you-can-eat options are priced at $39.99 for the classic menu and $69.99 for the premium menu for adults. Prices are lower for children, and those under 3 can eat for free.

The former Generous George's Positive Pizza & Pasta Place, a longtime staple in Alexandria, closed in 2009. The late Jeffrey Yates Sr. intended to revive the spot as a pizza restaurant before his 2018 death. According to The Zebra, Yates's son Jeffrey Yates Jr. was renovating the building, but plans for the Umiya Sushi ultimately came to fruition.
