ALEXANDRIA, VA — As the COVID-19 pandemic has changed patterns of in-person work, coworking spaces like ALX Community could thrive by offering short-term commitments for office space. ALX Community, a homegrown, dog-friendly coworking concept, announced the opening of its fourth location open on the Alexandria waterfront.

While other ALX Community locations have spaces ranging from single desks to offices, the new location at 101 N. Union Street is geared toward small and medium-sized businesses with staff between five and 30 people. The 17,000-square-foot space has two floors with 12 office suites, three meeting rooms, two lounge spaces and kitchens on each floor. Offices come fully furnished with Potomac River views and are move-in ready. The office suite floor plans provide a mix of private offices and open desk space to support different businesses' needs.

"Post-pandemic, many organizations have restructured to hybrid teams after realizing they don’t need the office sq. footage that they used to – especially when not everyone is in the office every day," said Kelly Grant, partner of ALX Community Office Suites. "We realized there was a gap in the workspace market for mid-size teams of 5-30 people that were looking to rightsize from their large office spaces into something more flexible and cost effective."

According to a spokesperson for ALX Community, members can take advantage of hybrid working options for employees working on different days. For example, a member business can sign an agreement for a 14-person office, but they can book extra seats to make the suite accessible to 30 or more employees.

The concept comes from partners Scott Shaw, Kelly Grant, and Amanda Kate Galbraith. The first ALX Community space opened in April 2018 at Founders Hall building at 106 North Lee Street and now focuses on private office space. Other ALX Community locations at the Atrium (277 S. Washington Street) and the Waterfront (201 N. Union Street) include options from day passes to shared space and dedicated space memberships. Along with office space, ALX Community provides monthly programming like rooftop yoga and member perks with partner businesses.
