ALEXANDRIA, VA — Starting Monday, work is beginning on the deteriorating bridge between Arlington and Alexandria.

Arlington County is leading the project to reconstruct the Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge over Four Mile Run. Construction workers will begin demolition on the median of the bridge's median Monday. The middle lanes of the bridge will be closed to traffic, which will reduce the road from four to two lanes. The initial work is expected to take about two weeks.

During the initial work, the entrance to Four Mile Run Park and the north driveway of the Mount Vernon Plaza will be by right-turn entrance and exit only. The south driveway of Mount Vernon Plaza will remain unaffected.

Workers are also doing duct bank installation work on the bridge and on the intersection of Arlington Ridge Road and South Glebe Road through early to mid September. Pedestrian detours will be marked with signage during this time.

The bridge reconstruction is being pursued due to poor condition of the bridge, which already has its west sidewalk closed because of structural deficiencies. The City of Alexandria is splitting the costs of the $23.8 million project with Arlington County. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2027.

Construction will happen on one side of the bridge at a time, meaning the other side will keep the bridge open to traffic in both directions. One sidewalk will be open at all times during construction.

Alexandria and Arlington collaborated on another project to fix the West Glebe Road Bridge, another deteriorating bridge between the localities, from 2022 to 2023.
