Celianna Gunderson Runs As Republican For Alexandria City Council In 2024

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Ahead of the Democratic primary election to choose candidates for Alexandria mayor and City Council, a Republican has announced a campaign for the general election.

Celianna Gunderson is running as a Republican and will advance to the general election, as she does not face a primary opponent. Gunderson is a single mother of two teens and paralegal with a specialty in intellectual property law who wants to break the Democratic party monopoly on City Council.

“For a city that values diversity, there is precious little diversity of thought or opinion on our city
council," said Gunderson in a statement. "I am working to earn the support of the residents of Alexandria that the current council has forgotten and ignored, and to give voice to the neighborhoods that the city council has abandoned. Conservatives and moderate swing voters have zero representation on city council right now."

The Republican candidate expressed concerns with the city's pace of development, quality of education and division among residents. She wants the city to give more staffing and moral support to the police department and support the school resource officer program.

Gunderson is banking on support from swing voters and Democrats casting a "protest vote."

"It’s just one seat. The Democrats will still hold the majority. But tens of thousands of citizens
would finally have a voice again," said Gunderson.

The Democratic primary election is scheduled for June 18, 2024, and the general election will happen on Nov. 4, 2024.
