Leaf Collection Starts October 31
As leaves start changing colors and dropping to the ground, it’s time to start thinking about leaf collection. The City’s leaf collection program starts October 31 and runs through December 30. Remember, there are three ways to recycle your leaves each season: rake leaves to the curb for vacuum collection; place leaves in paper leaf bags for curbside collection; or compost leaves and yard waste on-site. If you don’t know your leaf collection zone, forget your collection date, or need more information visit the city website, or call (703) 746-5323.

Trash Containers for Old Town Residents
Traditionally, Old Town residents have not received a trash container provided by the city. This fall, due to popular demand, the city will be distributing standard 64-gallon wheeled containers to Old Town residents. Residents will be given an opportunity to ‘opt-out’ and not receive a container. For more information visit the city website.

Recycling Your Packing Materials
There are many materials that you may use during a move that can be disposed of after you’re unpacked, simply put them in your recycling cart and move it curbside on your regular collection day. For cardboard boxes, please remove all shipping materials, flatten, and place boxes next to your recycling cart. Plastic wrap can be included with plastic grocery bags and recycled at your local grocery store. For more information, visit the city website.

Recycling: If you’re not sure, throw it away as trash
We all want to do our part and recycle as much as we can, but some packaging and containers are not recyclable at this time. Unless you are sure that an item is acceptable in the city’s recycling program, it is best to throw it away as trash. Unwanted items mixed with recyclables take a lot of time and effort to remove. Take a little time and investigate what is acceptable in the city’s recycling program. For a list of acceptable items visit the city website.
