Congressman Don Beyer: I Am Not Attending Trump's Inauguration

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Congressman Don Beyer announced Sunday he will not attend the presidential inauguration for Donald J. Trump on Friday. Here's what Beyer, a Democrat who represents Virginia's 8th congressional district, said Sunday night, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, in his announcement:

"Dr. King spoke of the fierce urgency of now. I wanted to let you know that I am not attending this Friday's inaugural ceremonies. Yes, I treasure the peaceful transfer of power. Yes, I will respect the constitutional prerogatives of the presidency. But I will not be part of normalizing or legitimizing a man whose election may well have depended on the malicious foreign interference of Russia's leaders, a person who lies profusely and without apology, who mimics the disabilities of others, who insults anyone who dares disagree with him, who would demonize an entire spiritual tradition, and who has demonstrated again and again a profound disrespect for women. His values and his actions are the antithesis of those I hold dear. It would be the height of hypocrisy for me to pretend to be part of this inaugural celebration."

Beyer isn't alone. He is one of about 35 Democrats so far who say they will not attend the inauguration, according to Slate, some in response to Trump's criticizing of civil rights legend Congressman John Lewis of Georgia.

Beyer was an enthusiastic supporter of Hillary Clinton, hosting at least one fundraiser for her during her campaign for the presidency.

Beyer said he plans to participate in the Women's March on Washington on Saturday.
