Council to Consider Tax Hike, Extended Meter Hours
City Council this week will consider raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes to the highest tax rate in the state.

City Council Tuesday evening will consider levying a higher tax on cigarettes and extending parking meter hours.
Alexandria City Manager Rashad Young is proposing a 10-cent increase on a pack of cigarettes, which would bring the tax to 90 cents per pack, reports the Washington Examiner.
He is also recommending that council approve extending parking meter hours by two hours from the current 7 p.m. end time to 9 p.m.

The Examiner reports Mayor Bill Euille is in favor of the tax increases. The mayor told reporter Taylor Holland that he supports the higher fee on cigarette taxes and while "he's not all that keen" on the extended meter hours, he plans to support it as a "congestion solution."
