Charges of Filing Phony Voter Registration Applications for Alexandria Man

Vafalay Massaquoi invented fake names and forged signatures on four different applications.

After being on the run for more than three months, authorities have finally arrested a former Alexandria resident accused of filing several phony voter registration applications.

According to multiple news outlets, 30-year-old Vafalay Massaquoi is accused of filing the fraudulent applications while working with a local advocacy group that aims to register eligible voters earlier this year.

Massaquoi allegedly invented fake names and forged the signatures for four eligible voters who did not exist. He then filed the applications with the Alexandria Office of the General Registrar, through the advocacy group.

The Washington Post spoke with a representative of the General Registrar, who said the fraudulent applications were immediately flagged, and were not registered as voters. The applications were immediately turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney's Office.

Massaquoi reportedly fled the area to avoid prosecution in July. He only just returned to the area, and authorities arrested him on Thursday.
