ALEXANDRIA, VA — Construction is officially underway on two new Inova hospitals after groundbreakings Monday as another facility prepares to open.

Inova Health System is relocating its Inova Alexandria Hospital from Seminary Road to the West End Alexandria development replacing Landmark Mall. In addition, Inova Franconia-Springfield will be located next to the existing Inova Franconia-Springfield Healthplex.

"The replacement of Inova Alexandria Hospital on these two sites continues Inova’s legacy of providing exceptional healthcare to Alexandria and the broader region, a tradition that has spanned more than 150 years," said Dr. J. Stephen Jones, Inova Health System's president and CEO. "Inova’s commitment to providing greater access to world-class care runs deep, as we invest billions back into the community to enhance healthcare services and ensure that our neighbors have access to the care they need for generations to come."

The Alexandria hospital will include a main hospital as well as a cancer center and an outpatient services facility. Inova expects main hospital construction will run from 2024 to 2028, while the Schar Cancer Center and Specialty Care Center will be constructed from 2026 to 2028. The 192-bed hospital will include fully private rooms and expanded services like advanced cardiac and neurosciences care, comprehensive women’s health services, and specialized cancer care.

The new hospital will anchor a mixed-use development with residential, retail, entertainment and Alexandria Fire Department's Fire Station 208. The former mall's three-level parking garage will remain at the site, with repairs and renovations being done. Meanwhile, Inova sought rezoning for the current Seminary Road location for potential townhouse and single-family home uses in the future.

"Inova’s re-investment in the City of Alexandria is both substantial and transformative," said Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson in a statement. "These projects will spur redevelopment and economic growth opportunities in the West End for the first time in decades. Alongside the world-class healthcare care for our residents, it’s truly a win on multiple fronts."

The Franconia-Springfield hospital will complement the adjacent Franconia-Springfield Health Center, according to Inova. While the existing facility offers emergency and outpatient services, the new 110-bed hospital will offer emergency care, inpatient services surgical services and a center for specialized orthopedic care. Completion of the Franconia-Springfield hospital is also expected in 2028.

"The Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus will ensure more families in our community have access to high-quality, compassionate care closer to home," said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay in a statement.

As construction ramps up at the two future hospitals, another facility is wrapping up construction. The Inova Health Center – Oakville is expected to open in November in the neighborhood between Potomac Yard and Del Ray. The facility will have an emergency room, outpatient services, ambulatory surgery center and physician offices.
