Inova Health System To Break Ground On Alexandria, Franconia-Springfield Campuses

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Construction will get underway on the new Inova Alexandria Hospital location at the West End development as well as another project south of the city.

On Monday, Sept. 30, Inova Health System will break ground on the Inova Alexandria Campus and Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus. The facilities are part of Inova's plan to expand in its Eastern Region, which covers Alexandria, Mount Vernon, and Franconia-Springfield. Inova is also preparing to open the Inova Health Center at Oakville in Alexandria by November 2024.

The new Inova Alexandria Hospital will be relocated from its current Seminary Road location to the West End development in the former Landmark Mall location. The city and development partners had announced a long-awaited plan to overhaul the 52-acre mall and replace it with mixed-use development. The redevelopment of the Landmark Mall will bring Inova hospital’s new campus, residential, retail, and entertainment uses. The Alexandria Fire Department's Fire Station 208 would also be relocated to the site. The mall's existing three-level parking garage will remain at the site, with repairs and renovations being done.

Inova expects main hospital construction will run from 2024 to 2028, while the Schar Cancer Center and Specialty Care Center will be constructed from 2026 to 2028. The hospital system is aiming to open the new location in 2028. Inova pursued rezoning for the old Seminary Road location for potential townhouse and single-family home uses.

The Franconia-Springfield hospital is another new facility resulting from Inova acquiring new land. The new facility will connect to the existing Inova Franconia-Springfield Healthplex.
