National Night Out Returns: See Events Planned Around Alexandria
National Night Out, an annual initiative to prevent crime through community gatherings, will be held Tuesday. Here are some local events.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Crime prevention and building a sense of community are the objectives of the annual National Night Out events being held Tuesday. There are various events planned around Alexandria.
Alexandrians are encouraged to step outside and join gatherings with neighbors, police, firefighters and city officials during National Night Out. Events vary by neighborhood but could include cookouts, block parties and other activities. Alexandria Police Department's K-9 Unit, Motorcycle Unit, Bike Patrol, Command Staff and patrol officers will visit neighborhoods and offer demonstrations with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, Alexandria Fire Department and other public safety agencies between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
National Night Out dates back to August 1984, drawing 2.5 people across 400 U.S. communities at the first events. The initiative was established by law enforcement agencies, neighborhood watch groups, civic groups, state and regional crime prevention associations and volunteers to stand up to crime and promote safe neighborhoods. Last year's National Night Out drew 38 million people in 17,000 communities from 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases.
