National Weather Service Issues Gale Warning for Potomac River​

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Gale Warning Saturday, in effect until Monday at 6 a.m. for the Potomac River.

Under a gale warning, winds of 34 to 47 knots are forecast. Operating a boat in gale conditions requires experience and a properly equipped vessel, the NWS warned. Recreational boaters should seek safe harbor, the NWS said.

A Wind Advisory is also in effect until Sunday night at midnight for much of the region. The strongest winds are most likely Saturday afternoon and evening, the NWS said. Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 MPH with gusts around 50 MPH.

Look out for downed tree limbs and power lines, the NWS warned. Scattered power outages may occur, according to the weather service. High profile vehicles may also be difficult to drive in windy conditions.
