New Pedestrian Zone Begins On Lower King Street In Alexandria
The new pedestrian block launches Friday for the holiday season, joining two permanent pedestrian blocks in Old Town.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A new pedestrian zone will launch Friday in Old Town Alexandria, extending several other pedestrian blocks on lower King Street.
The pilot program for a pedestrian-only zone will be in the 200 block of King Street following approval by Alexandria City Council last weekend. The pedestrian zone will be piloted in two phases: during the holiday season from Nov. 22 to Jan. 6 and March 14 to Sept. 30, 2025. City Council could consider a permanent pedestrian zone in fall 2025.
The city previously tested a pedestrian-only 200 block during Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend last year.

There are already two permanent pedestrian blocks next to the 200 block. The adjacent 100 block became a pedestrian zone in May 2020, and the change was made permanent in October 2021. The unit block and the Strand were added as a pedestrian zone over Memorial Day weekend 2022, and the permanent pedestrian zone was approved in November 2022.
Residents are asked to share feedback on the pedestrian block during the pilot program and see the project website for updates.
