Grandfather Was 'Brutally Beaten,' Possible ATM Robbery: Report
A 69-year old man was robbed and assaulted Monday night and died of his injuries Friday, according to police.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said that the victim was assaulted on Tuesday; the City has sent out a correction and states he was assaulted on Monday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The Alexandria Police Department is investigating a homicide that occurred in the 200 block of S. Alfred Street (see map below) on Monday, March 28, police said in an announcement Friday.

On Monday night, at approximately 9:33 p.m., officers responded to the area for an assault. The victim was located by police, conscious but injured, police said.
WJLA reports the man Melaku Abraha, 69, was a grandfather who was brutally beaten and may have been followed and robbed after he stopped at an ATM Monday night.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where it was determined he was suffering from a head injury, police said. An investigation later determined that the assault was part of a robbery.
The victim’s condition continued to worsen over several days in the hospital, and he succumbed to his injuries on Friday, April 1. The investigation is ongoing.
