Deteriorating Bridge Between Alexandria, Arlington To Be Reconstructed
Work will soon begin on a deteriorating bridge between Arlington and Alexandria, bringing construction impacts for several years.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A project to rebuild a bridge between Arlington and Alexandria will start in mid-August, bringing about two years of construction impacts.
Arlington County is leading the project to reconstruct the Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge over Four Mile Run. The localities cite the poor condition of the bridge, which already has its west sidewalk closed because of structural deficiencies. The City of Alexandria are splitting the costs of the $23.8 million project. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2027.
The project will involve upgrading the road and bridge deck. Construction will happen on one side at a time, meaning the other side will keep the bridge open to traffic in both directions. One sidewalk will be open at all times during construction.

The first phase of the project is expected to last for a year, with a single lane of traffic in each direction remaining open during southbound lanes construction. Weekend parking along Mount Vernon Avenue will not be available during the entire project.
Construction preparations will begin during the first week of August on the Alexandria side of Four Mile Run. Alexandria city government says it will maintain proper erosion and sediment controls along Four Mile Run, which will include tree fencing.
