Renamings Of Alexandria School Facilities Proposed To Honor Notable Figures
Four new facility names would honor people including a former mayor and NFL linebacker who graduated from ACPS.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Renamings of several Alexandria City Public Schools facilities for notable Alexandria figures are proposed.
ACPS has started a renaming process for four facilities within schools — two fields, a media center and courtyard. According to ACPS, the names would honor people who have made an impact on the school system and the city.
"The naming of these spaces is about honoring the individuals who have shaped the spirit of Alexandria," said Alexandria School Board Chair Michelle Rief in a statement. "They remind us that these spaces are more than just amenities—but places where legacies of kindness, service and excellence continue to grow."

The field at Parker-Gray Stadium at Alexandria City High School's King Street Campus is proposed to be named “Keith Burns Field.” The proposed name references Keith Burns, a 1990 graduate of then-T.C. Williams High School, who went on to play for 13 seasons as an NFL linebacker after college. Over the years, Burns has remained a dedicated community member in Alexandria.
The fields at the Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Camus are proposed to be named “Kerry Donley Field.” The name references former Mayor Kerry Donley, who died in 2022. The school system said he made long-lasting contributions to the city through public service, public education and community service.

A community petition sought the name “Jean B. Reid Media Center” at Naomi L. Brooks Elementary School. Reid, an educator, worked as a reading specialist at ACPS from 1971 to her 2001 retirement. She has taught and had leadership positions at several ACPS schools.
The Courtyard at the Early Childhood Center is proposed to be “Owen’s Place,” per a community petition. Owen Michael Wagner, the late son of Early Childhood Center Principal Heidi Haggerty-Wagner was described as a "compassionate teen dedicated to helping children" who "loved listening to music and attending sporting events."
The School Board is following school facility renaming policies for the process. A community petition with at least 100 signatures was presented for each of the sites.
The first of two community polls is underway through Oct. 22 to learn about the proposed names, provide feedback or make recommendations.
