Rising Tide: New City Marina Fees Take Effect April 1

Beginning April 1, Alexandria is raising boat license and docking fees at the City Marina—just in time for the start of boating season. 

The fees have not increased since 2009, but the city says costs of operating the marina have continued to rise. The city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Activities oversees marina operations.

Under the new fee structure, annual pleasure boat license fees for city residents will increase from $8 per foot per month to $9 per foot per month. Annual license fees for non-resident boats will increase from $9 per square foot per month to $11 per foot per month.

Overnight docking fees for pleasure boats will increase from $2 per foot per night to $2.50 per foot per night. Short-term docking fees for up to four hours are increasing from $15 per boat to $20 per boat.

The city is also increasing the number of marina slips for annual licenses from 48 to 54. There is currently a waitlist for slips.  

City Council approved the increases last month. The city’s Waterfront Commission previously signed off on the changes.  

“As the fees go up, we will improve amenities,” Councilman Justin Wilson said.

The fee increases and newly available slips could generate $58,000 in general fund revenues for the city, according to a memo from city staff.
