ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Starbucks location on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria is among the North America closures Starbucks has announced.

The Starbucks location at 100 S. Union St. in Alexandria is now listed as permanently closed and no longer appears on the Starbucks website. The location was in a historic building at King and Union Street. The next closest location in Old Town is 532 King St.

The closures were selected as part of the company's review of its North America locations.

"During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed," CEO Brian Niccol shared in an update on the Starbucks website. "Each year, we open and close coffeehouses for a variety of reasons, from financial performance to lease expirations. This is a more significant action that we understand will impact partners and customers."

Between new locations and closed locations, Starbucks said its footprint in North America will fall by about 1 percent. The chain will have 18,300 locations by the end of the current fiscal year and plans to add new locations in the next year. Starbucks will also make updates to over 1,000 locations "to introduce greater texture, warmth, and layered design," according to the CEO.
