Thousands Without Power in Alexandria
After the storm, more than 36,000 were without electricity; some of the larger outages are in Alexandria, Arlington and Springfield.
A heavy thunderstorm with rain and high winds rolled through Alexandria and Arlington Friday afternoon, and thousands of homes may be seeing power outages.
As of about 5 p.m. Friday, Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 36,700 without power in the Northern Virginia area. Many of the larger outages are in southern Arlington and Alexandria City.
You can keep track of power outages at Dominion Power's interactive power outage map.
If your power has gone out, please call Dominion Virginia Power at 1.866.366.4357 to report the outage—even if you think your neighbor already has done it. Calling helps Dominion Virginia Power pinpoint the cause of the outage and restore service faster.
"That was a pretty powerful storm that came through, lots of lightning," said Le-Ha Anderson with Dominion Virginia Power. "Some of our equipment was struck by lightning."
Tweets from some weather watchers noted the severity of the storm:
Capital Weather Gang reported, "S. Arlington and Alexandria catching brunt of this storm w/ outages, hail, wind. Headed towards SW DC and W C PG co."
Meteorlogist Alex Liggitt: "54mph wind gust reported in Annandale with the storms pushing through Alexandria now."
