What's Open, Closed For Labor Day 2024 In Alexandria

Most government offices will be closed, and some services will operate differently on Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Many families will head to beaches, camp sites and other vacation destinations or simply enjoy the last days of the pool during the Labor Day holiday weekend. For the holiday on Monday, many government offices and services will be closed or altered.

Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2 this year. Here are the openings and closings to know around Alexandria.

City of Alexandria government: Closed on Monday, Sept. 2.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and offices are closed on Aug. 30 and Sept. 2.

Alexandria courts: General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court Office (Courthouse and Del Pepper Center locations) will be closed on Sept. 2.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on Sept. 2. For animal emergency or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday service schedule on Sept. 2. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square (301 King St.) with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers in Northern Virginia will be closed on Sept. 2.

Health department: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School’s King Street Campus and Minnie Howard Campus will be closed on Sept. 2.

Historic Alexandria facilities: All museums will be open according to their standard schedules.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: Closed on Sept. 2. The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Library: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Sept. 2.

Metro: Metrorail hours are 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to midnight on Sunday and Monday. All lines run normal service, except the Red Line. Free local shuttles replace trains between Takoma and Glenmont, and Express shuttles operate from Fort Totten, skipping Takoma. Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, and Silver Spring stations are closed. On Sunday and Monday, normal frequencies will run between Shady Grove and Takoma stations. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule on Sept. 2. More weekend Metrorail information is available here.

Outdoor Pools: Old Town Pool is open from 8 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Labor Day. Warwick Pool is open from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on weekends and 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Labor Day. Great Waves Waterpark is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. during Labor Day weekend. The Potomac Yard fountain is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. during Labor Day weekend.

Parking: On Sept. 2, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This only applies to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Post offices: Closed on Sept. 2.

Recreation centers: Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 2. All other City of Alexandria recreation facilities will be closed.

Torpedo Factory Art Center: Open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Trash and recycling: Residential refuse, recycling, yard waste, and food waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of Sept. 2. The Household Hazardous Waste Electronic Collection Drop-off Center is closed.

Virginia Railway Express: VRE will not operate on Sept. 2.
