What's Open, Closed For Labor Day 2025 In Alexandria
The Labor Day holiday, the unofficial farewell to summer, will bring closures around Alexandria.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Although the last day of summer isn't until Sept. 21, residents will unofficially say farewell to summer over Labor Day weekend. That's when many families will have one last backyard barbecue, visits to the local pools or trips to the beach.
Many services will close or have adjusted schedules for the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 1. Here are the closures to know around Alexandria.
Alexandria city government: Closed on Sept. 1.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and offices are closed on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1.
Alexandria courts: The General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will be closed on Sept. 1.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on Sept. 1. For an animal emergency or wildlife concern, call 703-746-4444.
DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday service schedule and administrative offices will be closed on Sept. 1.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers in Northern Virginia will be closed on Sept. 1. Some services are available online at dmv.virginia.gov.
Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed on Sept. 1.
Historic Alexandria facilities: Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 1. All other Historic Alexandria museums will be closed.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.
Impound lot: The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
Library: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Sept. 1.
Metro: On Sept. 1, Metrorail will open at 6 a.m. and close at midnight with regular Sunday service, and Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess riders may make a reservation, but subscription trips will be canceled. Naylor Road, Suitland, and Branch Av stations are closed Aug. 30 and 31 with free shuttle buses as a replacement. The closed stations will reopen on Sept. 1. More weekend Metrorail information and Labor Day information is available on Metro's website.
Outdoor pools: Old Town Pool is open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 1 and remains open on weekends through Sept. 21. Warwick Pool is open 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 1 before closing for the season. The Potomac Yard Park fountain is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Labor Day and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through mid-October. Great Waves Waterpark is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 1.
Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on Sept. 1. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.
Post offices: Closed on Sept. 1.
Recreation, nature and art centers: Recreation and nature centers will be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Trash and recycling: Residential refuse, recycling, curbside food waste, and yard waste will not be collected Sept. 1 and will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Sept. 1.
Virginia Railway Express: VRE does not run on Labor Day.
