What's the Most Popular Coffee in America?

The answer may surprise you. This brand was founded in 1850.

Coffee is a daily ritual for many Americans, often more than once a day and the most popular coffee brand may surprise you.

While Starbucks with its 19,000 locations around the globe has become something like the McDonald’s of the coffee world, the Seattle-based business only holds 3.3 percent of the U.S. coffee market, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Are you a Starbucks fan, or do you visit a local small coffee shop like the new Swing’s in Del Ray or Beanetics in Annandale, which roast their own beans.

So just who perks supreme? Folgers, which was founded in 1850, remains the nation’s leading brand. It holds an average 15.6 percent share of the U.S. market by volume from May to July. Maxwell House ranks second with 10 percent. Private labels came in third, followed by Green Mountain with 4.3 percent.

JM Smuckers, which owns Folgers and brands such as Jif peanut butter, also has seen success in its other coffee brands – sales of JM Smuckers’ Dunkin’ Donuts packaged coffee rose by 6 percent. You can pick up a cup at the Dunkin' Donuts in Potomac Yards.
