11 Big Numbers That Explain Reston
The U.S. Census Bureau collected 5 years of Reston survey data, including population, housing, income, education and more.

RESTON, VA — One thing we don't need the U.S. Census Bureau to explain: Reston has grown over the last five years. We just have to look around.
The census performs monthly surveys of Reston residents and collects the findings over the past five years. The survey results include more than 40 topics, including demographic, housing, social and employment information.
Published earlier this month, the American Community Survey data collected survey results from 2011-2015. We've collected 11 of the big numbers below (along with data from the 2006-2010 report released 5 years ago).

What's different? There's 7,000 more residents. Surprisingly, a larger percentage were born in Virginia. And the median household income blew past $100,000. Here's more:
- Estimated population in Reston: 60,100 (53,257 in 2010)
- There were 25,300 households in Reston (24,114 in 2010)
- Families made up 57 percent of the households in Reston (54 percent in 2010)
- 27 percent of all households have one or more people under the age of 18 (24 percent in 2010)
- 22 percent of all households have one or more people 65 years and over (17 percent in 2010)
- 26 percent of residents were born in Virginia (23 percent in 2010)
- 27 percent spoke a language other than English at home. (same as 2010)
- The total school enrollment in Reston, Virginia was 13,400 (11,561 in 2010)
- The median income of households in Reston, Virginia was $110,401 ($97,692 in 2010)
- The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $2,333 ($2,303 in 2010)
- The average commute to work was 29 minutes — that's average, results vary (28.5 minutes in 2010)
