87-Year-Old Reston Pedestrian Dies Crossing Street: Police

An 87-year-old Reston man died after he was struck by an SUV while walking in a crosswalk at an intersection, Fairfax County Police said.

RESTON, VA — An 87-year-old Reston man died after he was struck by an SUV while walking near the intersection of Reston Parkway and Market Street in Reston Wednesday, authorities said.

Investigators said Peter McCandless was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of Reston Parkway from west to east at Market Street just after 7 a.m. He was walking inside the crosswalk but crossed against the signal, Fairfax County Police said.

A 2017 Mercedez ML350 was southbound on Reston Parkway before Market Street in the right lane and struck McCandless. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not identified by police, and passengers remained at the scene of the crash.

Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Alcohol was deemed to not be a factor in this crash and speed is still under investigation.

This is the ninth fatal pedestrian crash in the county to date in 2023. Year-to-date, in 2022, there were 23 fatal pedestrian crashes, the police department said.
