RESTON, VA — It’s time for bicyclists in the Hunter Mill District to tighten their helmet straps and check the air pressure of their tires. The annual Tour de Hunter Mill community bicycle ride returns on Sunday, May 4.

“Starting in 2020, the Tour de Hunter Mill is an opportunity for people to explore the Hunter Mill District on bicycles,” said Supervisor Walter Alcorn (D-Hunter Mill). “We've got some great new things that folks can see.”

One of those new things is the W&OD Trail pedestrian bridge at the Wiehle Avenue/Sunset Hills Road intersection, which officially opened last December.

“For those of you that have done this part of the trail before, or even driven down Wiehle, you know how dangerous it's been,” Alcorn said. “For the last few months, we've now had this bridge option. This is going to be part of the Tour to Hunter Mill this year, and this is a great way to experience it for the first time, if you haven't already.”

Sunday’s community bike ride is scheduled for 8 a.m to noon, beginning and ending at the North County Governmental Center at 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston. Participating bicyclists can choose to take either the short route (11 miles) or the long route (25 miles).

The ride is open to bicyclists of all ages, but riders 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All riders are required to wear a helmet. Bathroom facilities will be available at the Northern County Governmental Center, where participants can rest or grab snacks and water.

As in previous years, Tour de Hunter Mill riders will receive a special colorful pair of socks. This year’s socks are orange. The $30 registration fee covers rider and marshal insurance costs, 2025 Tour de Hunter Mill socks and a $5 donation to the Fairfax Alliance For Better Bicycling, which coordinated the registration and other ride logistics.
