Each year, Tephra ICA works directly with Fairfax County Public School art educators to create an educator’s packet that includes themes and supporting concepts, based on a Tephra ICA exhibition, to integrate into classroom curriculum for K-12 students.
Teachers and students are invited to view the featured exhibition and respond to themes by creating their own artworks in a variety of media. Student artwork, as selected by FCPS teachers and Tephra ICA staff, is exhibited as part of the Emerging Visions exhibition at the Tephra ICA gallery each Spring.

New 2023 Camp Themes:
Pictures and Stories
Have you ever heard the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words”? Have you drawn pictures before to help you tell a story? In Pictures and Stories, we will take a look at how artists today also incorporate storytelling in their artmaking. Campers will make drawings, paintings, storybooks, and more that tell stories and create worlds using pictures instead of words!
What a Colorful World
What’s your favorite color, and why? Does seeing different colors change how you feel? Did you know that all colors we see are made up of light? In this camp, we will explore all things light and color. Campers will explore the possibilities of art and have fun with activities such as sun-printing, observational drawing, color-mixing, and more!
Playful Spaces
Investigate all things 3-D! From blankets to boxes, Playful Spaces will cover the basics of building fun, unique forts and creating large artworks using different materials to transform spaces – sometimes call “installation art”. Campers will walk away with a basic understanding of engineering and a fort or installation of their own to take home!
