DULLES, VA — A 33-year-old Kenyan woman was deported after she was convicted for trying to enter the country in February using her sister’s travel documents, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection authorities.

On Feb. 21, Customs officers at Washington Dulles International Airport arrested Christin Nyabate Nyandemo after she arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, authorities say.

During a secondary inspection, Nyandemo admitted she was using her sister’s valid Kenyan passport and U.S. B1/B2 visitor visa to enter the U.S., according to a news release from CBP. Travelers typically use that type of visa to visit the U.S. temporarily, either for business or tourism.

In addition to the passport and visa, Customs officers found other documents belonging to Nyandemo’s sister, including tax forms, credit cards, and a birth certificate, the agency said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuted Nyandemo’s criminal case.

“We appreciate the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in pursuing this conviction,” said Christine Waugh, area port director for CBP’s Area Port of Washington, D.C. "We hope that it sends a strong message that CBP remains committed to intercepting those attempting to illegally immigrate to the United States and that we will continue working with our federal law enforcement partners to hold accountable all those who dare to violate our nation’s immigration laws.”
