DULLES, VA — A 35-year-old Ghanaian man who was wanted on child rape charges by the London Metropolitan Police Service was detained and removed by customs officials over the weekend at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, according to authorities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained Patrick Kwaku Dunyo, a Ghanainian national living in London, as he exited a flight Saturday that had just arrived from Frankfurt, Germany. Dunyo was wanted on rape charges stemming from the sexual assault of a 16-year-old on Nov. 21, authorities say.

During their search for Dunyo, London police determined that he had boarded a flight headed for Dulles airport, according to the CBP. They worked with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations attaché at the U.S. Embassy in London to have Dunyo detain once he arrived in Virginia.

After the flight landed, CBP officers escorted Dunyo to a secondary inspection area, where they verified his identity, according to a release. Once the officers determined that Dunyo was inadmissible to the U.S., they allowed him to withdraw his application for admission. This initiated the process that led to him being put on a return flight on Sunday to London, where he was arrested and charged.

“Dulles airport may be about 3,700 miles from London, but this apprehension proves that authorities working together across the globe can ensure justice for all,” said Christine Waugh, CBP’s area port director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C. “CBP helps victims to have a voice by working with our law enforcement partners, both stateside and overseas, to capture wanted fugitives and return them to justice.”

“The successful removal of Patrick Dunyo, who was sought by London authorities in connection with serious child exploitation charges, demonstrates the unwavering commitment of Homeland Security Investigations to safeguarding the most vulnerable among us” said Ricardo Mayoral, Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Director of International Operations. “This outcome was made possible through exemplary collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and our international counterparts abroad. HSI will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who seek to harm children are brought to justice and prevented from finding refuge in our communities.”
