RESTON, VA — Reston Hospital Center opened an expansion of its Inpatient Rehabilitation Center on March 2, adding 12 rooms, a second private gym, an enhanced dining facilities and additional equipment.

“This Inpatient Rehab expansion is a significant step in Reston Hospital’s overall growth plan and in our sustained commitment to offer advanced, high-quality healthcare services to our patients,” said John Deardorff, FACHE chief executive officer, Reston Hospital Center, in a release.

The expansion also allows RHC to integrate 40 new therapies and bring in 30 new staff members to work with patients as they go through the rehabilitation process.

"The people that we hire and that we recruit are not only extraordinarily talented and certified in their field, but they're passionate about the work that they do," said Sarah Marshall, the director of rehabilitation services at RHC. "They genuinely put everything they have into making rehabilitation, fun and functional and also meaningful for the individual who's going through it."

Each patient in the rehab center has their own individualized rehabilitation plan tailored to their particular needs, whether it be physical, occupational or speech therapy. The ultimate goal is to help them transition back to their daily lives.

"We've had people from all walks of life come through, so we really try to focus our rehabilitation plan around what's important and specific to that individual," Marshall said.

RHC's rehab center admits about 40 patients a month. With 12 beds being added to the 18 already at the facility, Marshall expects the number of admissions to grow.

"Our occupancy rate stays about 95 percent," she said. "That's what's allowed us to add these additional beds. We're really looking forward to almost doubling the amount of patients that we serve each year."

Currently, the rehabilitation center employs around 175 people. Marshall expects to hire more, as the center gears up to serve more patients.

"We've recently been on a bit of a hiring blitz," she said. "We've brought several new team members on ahead of the expansion. We've been training them. We've been orienting them, getting them ready and they're ready to serve our new patients."
