Speed May Be Factor In Crash That Killed 2 In Reston: Fairfax Police

RESTON, VA — Two people died following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in Reston, according to Fairfax County Police.

Police responded around 4:09 a.m. to a crash at North Shore Drive and Charter Oak Court, where a 2016 Ford Explorer left the road and struck a tree.

The driver, 35-year-old Shawn Ballard of Herndon, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to FCPD.

Nicole Hamm, a 48-year-old Reston resident, was a passenger in the Explorer when it crashed. She also was taken to the hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. That evening, she died at the hospital.

Investigators believe speed may have been a factor in the crash.
