VA Weather: Timeline, Rainfall Amounts, 40 MPH Winds Likely From Storm

A significant rainstorm is forecast to dump 1 to 3 inches of rain on Virginia Sunday and into Monday and 40 mph wind gusts are predicted.

VIRGINIA — Virginians should take time to enjoy the sunny weather while it's here, because clouds are expected to move into the greater Washington, D.C. area late on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and 40 mph wind gusts late in the weekend.

Just a week after a strong system hammered much of the East Coast, this new storm will take shape over Virginia and other mid-Atlantic states Sunday night into Monday, according to a recent Accuweather forecast.

The storm will bring strong winds, rain and possible flooding to areas along and east of the Interstate 95 corridor, forecasters said. The interior mid-Atlantic and the Delmarva Peninsula should experience the heaviest rains through Sunday night, according to Accuweather forecasters.

"We could see some gusts from the east between 20 to 40 mph," The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang forecasts for Sunday and Monday. "With steady and sometimes heavy rain, patchy urban or stream flooding is possible as 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain can fall quickly, mainly after dark."

For millions, it will end up being a case of déjà vu. "This next storm coming up the Eastern Seaboard will have similar characteristics to the one that slammed the mid-Atlantic and Northeast with heavy rain and wind just days ago," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg.

The storm could also have wide-ranging effects on travel. According to Accuweather, Interstates 20, 40, 64, 80, 81, 84 and 95 are among those that could be impacted.

Effects may also be felt at airports across the country with potential delays at big hubs in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.
