The last time I tried to paint something very small, I gave up. Maybe I was using the wrong paint or wrong painting gear. Maybe I was trying to get it done too quickly. Maybe I don’t have an eye for detail or am completely devoid of artistic talent? Or maybe, just maybe, I needed a little coaching from an expert on how to properly paint miniatures.
You wouldn’t expect a town of less than 10,000 people to have an expert miniatures painter, but Will Adamson, co-owner of Abingdon’s Wolf Den Games is just that. An adjunct history professor at Emory & Henry College when he’s not busy doing business, Will teaches “whatever they need me to teach”—Modern European history, women’s history, Military history, Archaeology. . . Martial arts cultures are among his favorite topics to teach, but best of all, he’s mastered the art of making the tiny statues in tabletop games come alive.
Will obviously takes the position that if he can master painting miniatures, then at the very least he can teach someone else (that includes YOU) to paint them competently. His popular class ‘Painting Miniatures’ being offered at the WDG Main Street shop on Sunday, February 18 from 2:30-5:30 pm is a testament to that. But competence (and confidence) aren’t the only takeaways. The class is actually relaxing and fun!

Will makes the process of learning failproof. You absolutely won’t fail. He covers all the basic techniques, including priming, color blocking, washes and dry brushing. Normally you WOULD need to buy or print a miniature, but for this class, you won’t even have to do that. Students get a set of basic brushes, a model to paint, and the use of WDG’s paints and model tools!
So, whether you’re already a painter or have never painted, or are just new to painting miniature models specifically for tabletop games, this class makes a great introduction. And the success of making something small more eye catching—even bursting with color and detail will arm you for your next RPG challenge!
