Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:
- The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center is advising people to avoid interfering with fawn white-tailed deer, unless the fawn has an obvious injury. The center receives many calls each year regarding normal fawn behavior, which take time and resources to handle. Contrary to popular belief, mother deer will still accept their fawn, even if it has human scent on it. The center does not take fawns, as there is limited rehab capacity available statewide, and most fawns do not do well in rehab or in the wild. There are several reasons why the center cannot take white-tailed deer, including legal restrictions due to the presence of Chronic Wasting Disease and lack of time, space, and financial resources. The center has provided a fawn FAQ section on their website for further information. (WDBJ)

- Firehouse Skate 'N Play is hosting a 'Sip N Skate Throwback Party' on May 20 at 10 p.m. The party is for adults 21 and up, with a live DJ and drinks available at the cafe. - A shed fire in Roanoke County on Sunday caused $215,000 worth of damages. No homes were damaged, and there were no reported injuries. The blaze occurred in the 700 block of Montvue Avenue in Salem and the shed contained two fully restored vehicles as well as a fully restored pull-behind camper. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. (WDBJ)
- Ashley Rodriguez-Zacarias, a Guatemalan immigrant and DACA recipient, overcame financial and educational barriers to excel in the Dental Hygiene Program at Virginia Western Community College. She also broke down language barriers by proposing and implementing ideas to help Spanish-speaking patients receive dental care, such as teaching basic Spanish to professors and peers, acquiring tablets for translating, and recruiting volunteers. Rodriguez-Zacarias hopes to continue representing the Latino community and inspiring others to keep pushing forward and fighting for a better future. (WDBJ)
