Roanoke: ‘The Star City Of The South’ With Plenty To Experience

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Roanoke so special.

Roanoke is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Roanoke has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Did you know that Roanoke is home to the world-famous Mill Mountain Star? Standing at 88.5 feet tall and weighing in at 10,000 pounds, this iconic landmark, also known as the Roanoke Star, is the largest freestanding man-made star in the world. It's also lit up every night, providing a stunning view of the city from miles away.
  • Roanoke is a city steeped in history, and one of its most fascinating historical sites is the Virginia Museum of Transportation. This museum houses a fascinating collection of locomotives and railroad memorabilia, as well as exhibits on the history of transportation in Virginia.
  • The Appalachian Trail runs right through Roanoke Valley, offering miles of hiking and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. If hiking isn't your thing, there are also plenty of opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and mountain biking in the area.
  • If you're a fan of craft beer, Roanoke is home to a thriving craft beer scene with dozens of breweries and taprooms to choose from. Be sure to check out Tour Roanoke, which takes you to some of the best breweries in the city and includes tastings and behind-the-scenes tours.
  • No trip to Roanoke is complete without a visit to the Roanoke City Market. The historic market has been in operation for over 130 years and is home to dozens of vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. The market is a great place to soak up some local culture and grab a bite to eat from one of the many food vendors.
  • Roanoke is known as the "Star City of the South," and its love for stars doesn't end with the Mill Mountain Star. In fact, the city has the Mill Mountain Star Trail which takes visitors from the base of the famous mountain to the summit of the Roanoke Star overlooking the Roanoke Valley.
  • Another must-visit attraction in Roanoke is the Taubman Museum of Art. The modern art museum features an impressive collection of contemporary art, as well as rotating exhibitions and interactive installations. The museum also hosts regular events, such as art classes and film screenings.
  • If you're a fan of the performing arts, be sure to check out the Berglund Center in Roanoke. The 10,500-seat multi-purpose arena hosts concerts, theater productions and other live events throughout the year. You might even catch a performance by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, one of the oldest professional orchestras in the country.
  • One of the best ways to experience the scenery around Roanoke it is by taking a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Called "America's Favorite Drive,” the parkway winds its way through the nearby mountains and offers stunning overlooks, hiking trails and picnic areas.
  • If you're looking for a unique dining experience, check out the Texas Tavern in downtown Roanoke. The classic diner has been a local institution since 1930 and is famous for its "cheesy western" sandwich, hot dogs and chile. Don't let its small size fool you—the Texas Tavern serves up big flavor and even bigger personality.
  • For a taste of Roanoke's arts and culture scene, head to the Grandin Village. This charming historic district is home to a variety of local shops, restaurants and galleries, as well as the historic Grandin Theatre, which has been showing movies since 1932.
  • Roanoke is also home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center. The hotel dates back to 1882 and has hosted presidents, celebrities and other notable figures over the years. Visitors can take a tour of the hotel, dine in one of its restaurants or stay overnight in one of its luxurious rooms.
  • Roanoke is home to the Center in the Square, a unique cultural attraction that houses several museums and galleries under one roof. Visitors can explore exhibits on science, art and history, as well as take in a live performance at the Center's theater or music hall.
  • Roanoke is home to the 12,000-acre Carvins Cove Natural Reserve. The park offers over 60 miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, kayaking and even a beach area. Nature lovers will love exploring the park's diverse ecosystem, which includes forests, streams and wildlife.
